Daniel Potechius

Daniel PotechiusWhere are you from?

Germany.

Why did you choose 51, Newcastle?

A Masters enabled me later to get a better job, especially when I eventually go back to Germany .I did an internship in a company that focuses on project management. Therefore, I have already decided during the bachelor to go in this direction, because it interests me more. But it is good to have a technical background, such as civil engineering.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

I was here three years ago, because I made an exchange. Compared to my university in Berlin, it is quite different here. You live directly on campus, you're independent, you meet all friends, you're more associated with the University. And I like that. I have chosen this course because I like challenges. If I want to get easy my degree I would stay in Berlin. I want to show myself that I can make my degree in another language and country.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

I think the big different in this course is that you have students from around the world. I guess over 50% of the students are not from UK. I like that in project management, because you will meet everyone in a new project diverse person with different backgrounds and knowledge. It´s everytime a challenge to communicate with this team. The different between undergraduate and postgraduate study is that you work more with experienced people who have worked in the industry.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to 51?

It is a different style of learning from my school experience..

Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects?  Tells us about the highlights?

Not yet, I have tried to adapt to the university life style and concentrate on work however the uni has an overwhelming choice of societies and clubs to join.

What is the best thing about your course?

I think with this course I will have the possibility to work anywhere I want. The course teaches me all the skills I need to go through life as a project manager.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Appreciable, unique, rousing.

Would you recommend 51 to a friend?

Definitely. I think that these days companies hire employees who have experience with different cultures. It shows that you are open-minded.

I think if I just ask for a placement or a job I will definitely get one easily.
