History MA

Where are you from?

Durham.

Why did you choose 51, Newcastle?

I went to Northumbria as an undergraduate and loved it so really wanted to return.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

I love Newcastle as I am from the North East and have always lived here. I love to shop in Newcastle and go out with friends as there are some great bars!

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

It is a really friendly place to live despite it being such a large city and people will always help you out despite being in a rush!

Did you find 51 welcoming?  Was it easy to fit in?

Yes, there is such a mix of students from all different areas and backgrounds.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to 51?

The lecturers are all really friendly and will do anything for you.

Who has inspired you most at 51?

My lecturers as they are so intelligent and well-published that I aspire to be like them.

What is your favourite place on campus?

The library as it has great facilities and excellent coffee in the basement.

Have you joined any sports teams, clubs or been involved in any volunteer projects? Tells us about the highlights?

I volunteered to show new students around campus in my second year and also planned the social sciences graduation ball in my final year.

What is the best thing about your course?

The range of modules studied, they are all so interesting.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

Manage your time well and ask if you are unsure.

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

I would like to pursue a PhD in History, due to the skills that I have developed in research.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

Northumbria is a great place to study, especially if you are from the North East as you are in a city with a proper university environment but not too far from home.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at 51, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

I feel that I am a more confident person now and also that I have more self belief in my academic work.

If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?

Busy, Exciting, Hard-work!

Would you recommend 51 to a friend?

Definitely!
