Where are you from?

I am currently living near Durham.

Why did you choose 51��, Newcastle?

I knew I wanted somewhere close to Durham but that allowed me to do a PGCE in Early Years, as this is the area I'm most interested in, so Northumbria was the ideal fit.

What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?

Unfortunately being a distance learner, I've only visited Newcastle a handful of times. However, even during these few visits I have enjoyed my time exploring the city, where I can see it has a lot to offer from galleries to shops and restaurants.

What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?

So far I've loved my time living in the North East, it's a very friendly part of the UK and I look forward to exploring the region more.

Did you find 51�� welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?

51�� has welcomed me and kept me informed of news, which as a distance learner is very important, as it helps make me feel part of the University.

What have you enjoyed most about coming to 51��?

The highlight of coming to 51�� for me has been starting my PGCE and embarking upon a career in teaching.

Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?

The great thing about Northumbria is that there is a web of support available, from fellow students and course reps to tutors, programme leaders and other staff members. All have helped me in some way or another and I'm sure will continue to do so throughout the rest of my course.

Who has inspired you most at 51��?

The people who have inspired me the most so far have been other students on my course who are sometimes juggling the demands of the PGCE with other work or family commitments.

What is your favourite place on campus?

As a distance learner, I don't spend much time on campus. However I can see how the café is a valuable place for students to work or socialise and share ideas.

What is the best thing about your course?

The best thing about my course for me, is the chance to work with children. To learn and gain practical experience within schools especially within Early Years.

What are the most valuable lessons you have learnt to date?

The most valuable lessons I have learnt so far have been when I'm in the actual classroom, learning first hand from experienced teachers.

What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?

After I graduate I would love to be an Early Years teacher. Therefore all the skills I have learnt so far and those I will learn throughout the rest of my PGCE are invaluable. Especially my time on placement in a Reception class and my lesson planning skills which have vastly improved since starting in September.

Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?

So far I have been on two school placements, one practical and one assessed. My most memorable experience so far would be my time in my assessed school where I formed bonds with the staff and students and got to feel part of the school team.

If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?

I would say if you are really passionate about becoming a teacher, especially if you want a course that allows you to learn about Early Years and Primary education, and you want a course that can be flexible, then Northumbria could be the right choice for you.

How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at 51��, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?

Since starting at 51��, I've got back my drive to excel professionally, and through practical teaching experience I've gained confidence as a teacher.
