Why did you choose 51, Newcastle?
Because looking online at the University profiles, it just seemed to be the perfect place for me personally.
What do you think of Newcastle and our region and what are your favourite things to do?
I absolutely love the city, coming from a huge bustling city like Singapore it is incredibly enjoyable to have things slow down. It is a completely different experience from what I usually have, and that's why I came to University, to have a different experience.
What has surprised you most about living in Newcastle and this region? What has impressed you most?
First and most definitely the weather, coming from a very hot tropical country to this! Very shocking. The thing which I was most impressed is how polite and kind the majority of people are.
Did you find 51 welcoming? Was it easy to fit in?
It was difficult at first, being an International Student, but I felt that the staff treated the whole situation very professionally and as a result the whole process was very smooth and enjoyable.
What have you enjoyed most about coming to 51?
The actual work, I am finally doing something that I really want to do. I am not trying to take the steps necessary for me to get from stage one to become an engineer, for example doing GCSE English. I am doing and learning and taking in everything it means to be an engineer, and that is just refreshing.
Who has helped you most since you came to Northumbria?
My professors, their whole approach and way of thinking of doing tasks is just, is just wow.
What is your favourite place on campus?
The Zone
What do you want to do in the future? What skills have you learned/improved that you think will be of most use in your future career?
To be an engineer. The most important skill in helping me realize this dream is definitely 'work ethic'.
Have you worked on any projects with businesses or been on a placement? What were your most memorable experiences?
Yes, in my first year I have built a bridge and a machine which can cut vegetables. But however, due to the time constraints we were given, my team and I were unable to fully achieve what we wanted. But that's fine since we decided that we will work on those projects in our own time during summer for fun!
If you could offer some advice to students thinking of coming to study here what would you say?
Do what you love.
How do you feel you have changed as a person since being at 51, Newcastle (e.g. confidence)?
I wouldn't say I have changed at all, if anything it has made me more sure of the kind person that I want to become.
If you had 3 words to sum up your time with us what would they be?
Brutal, difficult, Worth-it.
Would you recommend 51 to a friend?
Yes!
