The Fragile Edge – Protecting and restoring fragile coastlines through agriculture
Combining ancient building techniques with innovative materials, this seaweed and cattle farm builds upon Seaham’s rich farming history and explores what the future of farming could look like in a more uncertain world. Tackling issues associated with global warming, extreme weather, food insecurity and a decline in biodiversity, this ‘Future Farm’ explores regenerative agricultural and architectural methods which restore oceans, protect fragile coastlines and reduce methane emissions, all while providing local sustainable food sources and employment. The materials for the buildings are grown on the site itself in an effort to replenish the land after decades of soil degradation.
