Smith’s Dock

The cultural significance of the ferry terminal transcends its function as a critical piece of transit infrastructure. With the aim of creating new connections along the River Tyne, sensitive placemaking is paramount throughout the design, given the crucial role Smith’s Dock once played within the community. Appreciation and connection to the river and the heritage materialises in subtle nods within the building.

Past and present movement lines of the post-industrial site create a curved correlation line, opposing the linear forms once seen here. The integration of nature into the site and terminal itself juxtaposes the rigidity of the past industrial forms, creating the concept for the ferry terminal: an extension of the landscape in a linear form.
