Our two Centre's for Doctoral Training - Renewable Energy Northeast Universities (ReNU) and Renewable Energy Northeast Universities Plus (ReNU+are doctoral training programmes funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, and delivered by Northumbria, Durham and Newcastle Universities.

From the start ReNU is backed by a strong portfolio of 36 partners including 27 companies (both SMEs and multinationals), non-profit organisations, key networks, local government and prestigious academic institutes across the globe.

ReNU+ collaborates with a diverse portfolio of partners, including SMEs, multinationals, non-profits, government bodies, and leading academic institutions. Together, we drive innovative research and develop tailored solutions to real-world energy challenges. Partnering with ReNU+ offers a strategic edge in advancing technologies, shaping a sustainable future, and accessing top-tier doctoral talent ready to deliver transformative innovation.

A key objective of ReNU+ is to cultivate the next generation of Doctoral Carbon Champions who will lead an equitable and inclusive energy transition for all. Our training programme connects students with industry through bespoke R&D projects, site visits, guest lectures, and placements, ensuring they are equipped to address practical challenges with interdisciplinary expertise.

Focused on low-carbon energy generation, resilient energy storage, and sustainable supply chains, ReNU+ empowers businesses to lead in the transition to Net Zero. Partners contribute through direct sponsorship or in-kind support, fostering a collaborative environment that accelerates innovation and growth.
