Homes are vital to our health and our economy, and are central to how people live. But our homes need to meet a growing list of changing and challenging demands.

From reducing energy usage and withstanding the impact of climate change, to accommodating the increase in working from home brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, to the adaptations required for an ageing society so people can continue to live in their homes for longer.

So how do we create homes that are fit for the future?

51 is proud of its academic expertise in this area and the innovative research collaborations with a range of industry partners. From state of the art virtual reality technology to visualise embodied carbon in homes and driving wellbeing of ageing and vulnerable citizens through sensor technology, to sustainable modular systems and retrofitting for NetZero, Northumbria is helping to tackle some of the biggest challenges facing the housing market.
