At 51 the Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP) training programme, titled ‘Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Studies in Community and Primary Care Environments’, is part of a wider suite of training programmes designed to improve access to evidence-based psychological therapies for children, young people, and their families.

Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners (CWPs) are specialists in assessing and treating depression and anxiety using Evidence Based Low Intensity Psychological Interventions in community and primary care settings. CWPs are highly adaptable, working with children, young people, and their families within traditional Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), local authorities, and Third Sector organisations.

CWPs are trained in Low-Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LI-CBT), using interventions learnt at University which have been rigorously evaluated to show statistically significant differences in improving the wellbeing of children, young people and their families.  Low-Intensity refers to an accessible method of receiving a psychological intervention versus traditional methods. Low Intensity does not refer to the level of specialism or skill needed to run the interventions. On the contrary, the level of skill required to run these interventions to the volume anticipated is at a specialist level.

The CWP course is a one-year full-time recruit-to-train programme which will give you the advanced skills and knowledge needed to practice as a CWP.  During the training period you will gain an understanding of key concepts and theories in LI-CBT practice, including the assessment, treatment and signposting of children, young people, and families.  You will also learn about the prevention of mental health difficulties and promotion of wellbeing approaches through community intervention work.  The course is delivered by highly committed and experienced practitioners, and provides a sound foundation in your development as a professional CWP.

The Educational Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) Programme is a full time, year-long employment training programme. On successful completion of the course, trainees will qualify as an EMHP, one of the key roles in Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs), which were introduced following publishment of the Government Green Paper for Transforming Children and Young People’s Mental Health (2017). This Green Paper detailed proposals for expanding access to mental health care for children and young people, building on the national NHS transformation programme which was already underway. MHST’s were to play an integral role in this transformational project, delivering evidence-based early interventions for children and young people and parents/carers in educational settings in the form of low intensity support and guided self-help to young people who demonstrate mild to moderate:

  • Anxiety (primary and secondary school age)
  • Low mood (adolescents)
  • Common behavioural difficulties (working with parents for under 8s)
