Dr Victoria Roper

Associate Professor

Department: Northumbria Law School

Victoria is an experienced lecturer and researcher. As a qualified solicitor, she uses her private practice experience to enhance her teaching practice. Victoria worked as a corporate solicitor at Ward Hadaway, a leading North East based commercial firm, before joining Northumbria.

Victoria is an experienced researcher. Her two research areas are corporate manslaughter and legal education. Victoria recently completed a corporate manslaughter doctorate.  As well as publishing on the topic of corporate manslaughter, she has advised a number of jurisdictions considering enacting similar offences. Her corporate manslaughter website and blog is a useful resource for academics, students and practitioners interested in keeping up to date with corporate manslaughter (www.corporatemanslaughter.blog).

Victoria has a number of influential external roles. She is the interim-Chair of the Law Society for England and Wale's national Education and Training Committee, a Trustee of the UK Clinical Legal Education Organisation (CLEO), an experienced external examiner and a Senior Fellow of the HEA. Victoria was shortlisted at the Northern Law Awards 2018 for Law Teacher of the Year.

In 2019, she organised a Modern Law Review funded international seminar on legal education at Northumbria, 'Revisiting Pressing Problems in the Law: What is the Law School for? 20 Years On’. She is currently working on another funded international teaching project with an academic from India and is also supervising a legal education PhD.

Victoria’s role involves teaching a range of programmes within the Law and Business Faculty, as well as teaching annually at a partner institution in Hong Kong. She has extensive experience of leading teaching and administrative teams as well as line management. In addition, Victoria has experience working in the Law School’s award winning Student Law Office supervising students who provide free legal advice to entrepreneurs, companies, and charities. Victoria and a colleague edit a blog for the business and commercial clinic in the Student Law Office with the aim of encouraging their students to contribute articles of interest.
