Dr Steven Pattinson

Associate Professor

Department: Newcastle Business School

Steven is an Associate Professor in Entrepreneurship and Head of Education. He was a secondary school teacher of Business Education before embarked on an academic career via a three year PhD scholarship at Teesside University in 2010. He has over two decades of experience teaching across a range of business related subjects. He is particularly interested in entrepreneurship and innovation the context of science-based SMEs, technology innovation, entrepreneurship, small business enterprise and development, social entrepreneurship and innovation, entrepreneurial universities, and university research culture.

Steven Pattinson

Steven is an Associate Professor in Entrepreneurship. His research focuses on entrepreneurship in the context of science-based, high technology SMEs. He has published in leading journals including British Journal of Management, Management Learning, Industrial Marketing Management, Journal of Management Inquiry, Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development, and The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation. Steven is interested in the use of storytelling and sensemaking in the construction of coherent accounts of the world. 

As a research focused academic, Steven recognizes the importance of providing students with a rich learning experience by using both disciplinary and pedagogic research in his teaching. Steven views academic theory and practice as inseparable, with empowerment a key factor to enhancing learning, and therefore seeks to create productive learning environments using ‘real life’ case studies.

He has worked on a number of research projects in economic development and social enterprise funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Institute for Local Governance, Gateshead Council, National Offender Management Service (North East) and Enterprise Educators UK.

He is the Teaching Case Study Editor for The International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation and Associate Editor (Entreprenruship) for the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing. He is also an Editorial Review Board member for Industrial Marketing Management.
