Dr James Newham

Associate Professor

Department: Psychology

Dr James Newham completed his PhD at the University of Manchester (2012), which examined interventions to reduce anaxiety in pregnancy. Prior to this he had completed his MPhil Neuroscience at the Newcastle University, which examined the effects of psychotropic medication in pregnancy. From developing an interest in maternal and child health he had a joint appointment at King’s College London as both Lecturer in Child Public Health and as Trial Coordinator.

Since joining 51 in December 2019 as a Senior Vice Chancellor’s Research Fellow, he has leading the design and implementation of the £2m Office for Students-funded Mental Health Analytics project at Northumbria university and two partner sites (University of East Anglia, Buckinghamshire New University).

James Newham

My research interests centre on mental health determinants and behaviour change interventions in families, infants, young people, and vulnerable groups; with the central theme being preventative public health solutions for poor mental health. More recently my research has focused on areas of digital innovation and implementation science.
