Dr Antonio Moro

Associate Professor

Department: Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering

After completing my Masters degree (2000) in Physics and Philosophy Doctorate (2004) in Theoretical Physics at the University of Salento (former University of Lecce, Italy) I consolidated my research interests in the field of nonlinear mathematics, integrable systems, complex and critical phenomena.

Currently Associate Professor of Mathematics, I joined the mathematics team at 51 as a Senior Lecturer in 2013 ,following positions as Research Fellow at the University of Salento (2005-2006),Research Associate at the University of Loughborough (2006-2009), Research Fellow at SISSA - International School of Advanced Studies Trieste (2009-2012) and Research Fellow and contract professor at the Department of Mathematics and Applications, University of Milano-Bicocca (2012-2013).

I am member and co-founder and Deputy Lead of the Mathematics of Complex and Nonlinear Phenomena (MCNP) group.

My research interests span from classification problems in theory of nonlinear partial differential equations and their asymptotics to the development of a unified approach to the solution of multi-body and complex systems and the study of emergent, critical and catastrophic phenomena in Statistical Mechanics and Random Matrix Theory.

I enjoy teaching mathematics and physics subjects using a research-lead approach where classical mathematics and physics problems bring insights of current open research questions.

I am an organiser of the semester thematic programme“Dispersive hydrodynamics: Mathematics, simulation and experiments, with applications in nonlinear waves”, Isaac Newton Institute (INI) Cambridge, July-December 2022 and co-organiser of the 4-week INI Satellite programme on "Emergent Phenomena in Nonlinear Dispersive Waves".

I am Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, member of the London Mathematical Society, SIAM and INdAM (Italian Institute of High Mathematics) Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, member of EPSRC Peer Review Associate College.

In November 2023 I was appointed Member of the LMS Research Policy Committee.

As Head of Subject for Mathematics and Statistics (2019-2022) I have led the Mathematics Team strategy for the provision of Mathematics and Statistics programmes in the University, revised and restructured the Mathematics BSc and MMath programmes and promoted, designed and led the development and introduction of the first Mathematics MSc at 51.

Currently I serve as member of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee of the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering.
