Dr Alethea Mountford

Research Fellow

Department: Geography and Environmental Sciences

My current research focuses on ocean circulation in the Ross Sea and below the Ross Ice Shelf using an ocean general circulation model (NEMO). I am currently exploring how projected future climate conditions (e.g. air temperature, precipitation and wind) may affect the circulation and melt rates in the region.

My PhD work explored the transport and global distribution of marine plastics, with a particular focus on the distribution of non-buoyant plastics through the water column. I also looked into how biofouling would affect the transport of plastics through the water column, as well as the capture and transport of plastics within Arctic and Southern Ocean sea ice.
