John Bates

Assistant Professor

John is a Senior Lecturer in Northumbria Law School.

John graduated from the University of Leicester with an LLB (Hons) degree in law and then completed his Legal Practice Course at the College of Law, York.  He qualified as a solicitor in 1997 and in 2002 became a Partner in a regional law firm, where his principal areas of practice were Civil Dispute Resolution (commercial disputes, employment law, and tort disputes including personal injury and clinical negligence litigation).  He has extensive litigation and advocacy experience. 

John joined the School in 2008.  He teaches across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules, focussing on his specialist subject areas: Tort Law, Civil Dispute Resolution, and Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury Litigation.  He also leads a module on Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and the Law.

John has been responsible for the design, development, enhancement and delivery of modules across several programmes, including the M.Law, LL.B., LL.B Law with Business, LL.B Law with International Business, Graduate Diploma in Law, Legal Practice Course and Bar Professional Training Courses.

John has a Pg.Cert in Academic and Professional Learning.  He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.  He currently is the Programme Leader for the LL.B (Hons) Law with Business and LL.B(Hons) Law with International Business.  He has previously led the LL.B(Hons) Distance Learning programme.

He is also a member of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers and the North of England Medico-Legal Society.

Research interests focus on Tort Law, Civil Dispute Resolution (including Online Dispute Resolution and Alternative Dispute Resolution), Clinical Negligence and Personal Injury Litigation, and Artifical Intelligence, Robotics and the Law.
